Choquequirao is a lost city where the Incas took shelter starting in 1536. It is located in the Valley of Vilcabamba – The Convention in the rain forest at 3300 m above sea level.
This archaeological site is considered just as important as Machu Picchu. The journey begins in the city of Cusco. At about km 145 where paved road and 10 unpaved roads lead to the village of San Pedro de Cachora, where km 32 starts. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, on route we can also appreciate the flora and fauna of the Apurimac Canyon, the deepest canyon in the world, reaching the “Cradle of Gold” of the Incas.
DAY 1: CUSCO (3350m.) – CACHORA (2850m.) – SANTA ROSA (2115m.)
We leave Cusco at 4:00 am to get to Cachora at approx. 8:00. From here we can see the majestic snowcap mountain of Padrayoc which stands at 5482 m. The walk on the first day is about 21.70 km. On the way we will observe other snowcaps of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora, observing the beautiful change of scenery from precipices to snowy mountains. We will enjoy lunch at Rosalinda where can observe the Apurimac with its impressive depth. We set camp in Santa Rosa.
DAY 2 – SANTA ROSA (2850m.) – CHOQUEQUIRAW (3270m.) – RAQAYPATA (2910m.)
Early (5:00 am approx.) after breakfast, we continue the climb to Choquequirao, where we arrive after about 5 hours. Guided tour and afterwards some free time. Observe three levels of excavated ruins where we see enclosures, terraces and other places in the process of excavation and even some unexplored areas. Lunch and dinner in Raqaypata (2910 m).
DAY 3 – RAQAYPATA (2910M.) – PLAYA ROSALINA (1550M.) – (. 1930M) CHIQUISQA
After breakfast trek back towards Chiquisqa. On the way we observe the Apurimac canyon and lush vegetation with a variety of flowers and orchids. Walking time is approximately 10 hours. Altitude: 1950-3033-m. Lunch at Playa Rosalinda and then continue to Chiquisqa. Here we spent the night at our campsite.
DAY 4 – CHIQUISQA (1930m.) – CACHORA (2850m.) – CUSCO.
Early after breakfast (5:00 am), we continue until we reach Cachora. On the hike we can appreciate the majestic snowcapped Padrayoc Mountain again. Walking time to reach Cachora is about 7 hours. Then we catch the shuttle that will return us to Cusco at approximately 10 pm.
